Nepal leave with high ambitions

KATHMANDU, JUN 24 - The Nepali national cricket team on Tuesday embarked on its quest to make a back to back appearance in the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, beginning with a week-long tour of England. Players and officials of Nepali national cricket team pose for a group photo after a farewell programme in Kathmandu ahead of their departure to England for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers preparations, on Tuesday.

After completing the 15-day tour of India, the Nepali cricketers left for London for a second phase of their preparation where they will undergo few training sessions at the Marylebone Cricket Club apart from playing four practice matches. Before the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers that begins in Ireland and Scotland from July 9-26, Nepal will also play the Netherlands in a four-match Twenty20 International bilateral series set for June 30 to July 3.

Nepal created history by securing a maiden berth in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh last year and having prepared for a tight schedule before the Qualifiers, the team is confident to qualify as the tournament winners.

"When we participated in our first Qualifiers (in 2012) we had finished third and we qualified for the World Twenty20 in our second attempt ending up third in the next edition. The progress that we have made has given us confidence and now we are eyeing the top spot," said skipper Paras Khadka ahead of the team's departure.
Khadka believes the team this time is left without a room comment regarding the preparation and will be raring to win the Qualifiers.

"We had an excellent training in India. We will gain further exposure after playing practice matches in England and Twenty20 Internationals against the Netherlands. We are looking forward to win the tournament," the skipper said adding his team has all the qualities to return as champions from Europe.
"We know that at such big stage each and every team will be well prepared and pretty aware of their opponents. But we have been playing a good level of cricket for the last two or three years. We need to peak at the right time and play with our potential to return as champions," added Khadka.

Coach Pubudu Dassanayake said his team is able to handle the pressure to qualify for the World Twenty20. "The pressure is always there because it doesn't matter how good you are when you are playing a tournament of such caliber. The positive thing about this team is that it is hungry for success. The team has raised its level really high and we now look like an international team. There is a lot to expect from this side," said Dassanayake.
Minister for Irrigation, NP Saud bade, farewell to the team. CAN Acting President Deepak Koirala also announced a cash prize of Rs 250,000 each to the member of the team if qualifies for the World Twenty20.
