Nepal to face depleted Scots

Scotland will miss the services of their key players due to county commitments, opening up a chance for Nepal to impress in their WCLC debut. Nepal are desperate to impress their fans following a poor performance in the Qualifiers, where they finished bottom of the seven-team Group ‘A’ to miss out on second consecutive World Twenty20 appearance. A depleted Scotland side might raise eyebrows in the Nepali camp but the Scottish team is confident the new-look side is still strong. “A number of players are unavailable for this series, but the fact that we are able to name a very strong side is testament to the depth that is now building in Scottish cricket,” head coach Grad Bradburn told the official website of Scotland cricket. Bradburn added his country will have a clear home advantage. “Nepal is a side we will respect highly, while we will be confident of bringing specific skills to the conditions at Ayr, which we know well,” said Bradburn. Scotland will be without Rob Taylor, Josh Davey, Calum McLeod, Freddie Coleman and Matt Machan, who return to their respective county sides after the completion of the World Twenty20 Qualifiers.

The Scottish squad led by Preston Mommsen will include Matthew Cross, Richie Berrington, Kyle Coetzer, Con de Lange, Alasdair Evans, Hamish Gardner, Michael Leask, George Munsey, Safyaan Sharif, Craig Wallance and Mark Watt.

Nepal have also made few changes in the side, axing out-of-form Subash Khakurel and Binod Bhandari. While Prithu Baskota and Mahesh Chhetri have replaced the batting duo, rookie Siddhant Lohani is poised to get a 50-over debut for the national team following his impressive performance in the only match he played (against Jersey) in the Qualifiers. Injured Sagar Pun and Jitendra Mukhiya, who is struggling with his fitness, are already back home. Skipper Paras Khadka will lead Nepal while Gyanendra Malla will be his deputy. Sharad Vesawkar, Pradeep Airee, Rajesh Pulami, Anil Mandal, Sompal Kami, Avinash Karn, Shakti Gauchan, Basanta Regmi and Karan KC will make the final squad. Cricket Scotland has also asked clubs to help raise money for Nepal earthquake victims on the sidelines of the tournament. The clash against Scotland is going to be Nepal’s first round game of the WCLC--a 50-over ICC tournament for the top eight non-Test playing nations to be played over two games in 50-over format. United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Namibia, Netherlands and Kenya are other teams in the tournament, who will face each other in home and away system. The top six teams following their performance in the WCLC will join four other teams from the ICC ODI rankings in the 2019 50-over World Cup Qualifiers.
