Pakistan choose to bowl; Irfan returns..
Pakistan captain Azhar Ali won his his fourth toss in a row and chose to bowl against Sri Lanka on a pitch which had a tinge of grass, in the first ODI in Dambulla. Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews admitted that he would have bowled first as well, citing early assistance for the seamers.
Sri Lanka, playing their first ODI since the World Cup, handed a debut to left-arm spinning allrounder Milinda Siriwardana, who had racked up 1144 runs at 67.29 across 19 first-class games this season. The hosts were 852 ODIs light following the retirements of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene but they were bolstered by the return of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Lasith Malinga after a dispiriting Test series.
Sachitra Senanayake, though, was left out, leaving legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna to assist Siriwardana in the spin attack.
Pakistan also found themselves in a rebuilding phase after the departures of key players of their own in Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi. However, Mohammad Irfan, who had recovered from a stress fracture of a pelvis sustained during the World Cup, returned to the side alongside Ahmed Shehzad, who was dropped for the home series against Zimbabwe.
Mohammad Hafeez, who had missed the Pallekele Test to undergo a test on his bowling action was also back and will be allowed to bowl until the results come out. Babar Azam, who scored a measured fifty on debut in the third ODI against Zimbabwe, was picked ahead of Asad Shafiq.
The match holds greater significance for Pakistan who need to win the series to leapfrog West Indies to eighth spot and push for Champions Trophy qualification.
