Ervine stars in big Zimbabwe win
International century to help Zimbabwe pull off a brilliant seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the first One-Day International on Sunday (August 2).
That was after Ross Taylor (112 not out) and Kane Williamson (97) continued their spectacular form to help New Zealand rack up 303 for 4 after being inserted at the Harare Sports Club.
However, Ervine's unbeaten 130 off 108 balls helped Zimbabwe chase down the tall target comfortably as it got to 304 for 3 in 49 overs.
Ervine, promoted to No. 3 by Dav Whatmore, the coach, repaid the faith by going past his previous ODI best of 85.
Zimbabwe began its chase well with Hamilton Masakadza and Chamu Chibhaha putting on 74 for the opening wicket in 14.5 overs. Nathan McCullum, the off-spinner, broke through when Chibhabha was castled for 42.
Ervine then joined Masakadza and the duo utilised the good platform by further consolidating through a second-wicket stand that fetched Zimbabwe 120 runs.
It was McCullum who struck again and sent back Masakadza, who fell 16 short of a ton when he was caught by Luke Ronchi behind the stumps.
Elton Chigumbura, the captain, joined Ervine and ensured Zimbabwe marched along at a brisk pace, adding 66 more for the third wicket in 60 balls. Chigumbura fell to McCullum, New Zealand's lone wicket-taker on the day, when he was caught by Martin Guptill, trying to clear long-on.
Sean Williams, in the company of Ervine, then saw Zimbabwe through. McCullum ended with figures of 3 for 62 in nine overs.
Earlier, Zimbabwe began well with the ball, dismissing Guptill and Tom Latham, the two New Zealand openers, within the first 10 overs.
However, Taylor and Williamson kept the bowlers at bay for the next 27.4 overs, adding 137 for the third wicket. It was the 10th century partnership between the duo, a record for a New Zealand pair in ODIs.
Taylor finished with an unbeaten 112, completing his third hundred in five matches in the process. And while Williamson narrowly missed out on a century of his own, he registered his fifth consecutive score in excess of 50 in ODIs.
Williamson now sits on top of the batting charts for 2015, with 1134 runs to his name, which is also the most by a New Zealand batsman in a calendar year. He is followed by Taylor, who has made 1041 runs.
